FAQ's regarding how SilverCell products work.

What is an R Value?

An R-Value is an assigned number derived from a specific testing procedure (or calculation) to determine a materials (or building assemblage) "resistance to heat transfer". The higher the R-Value, the more resistant a material (or building assemblage) is to heat transfer.

What is a total system R Value?

All materials that are used in the construction of a building have an "inherent R-Value", meaning that some building materials resist heat better then others. Building insulation are designed to resist more heat then other non-specific materials. To derive the "System R-Value", the R-Value for each component in the building assemblage must be taken into account. The "System R-Value" (RT) is the sum of the R-Values for each component in the system.

What is Meant by the Terms "Up" and "Down" Heat Flow?

These terms are related to the direction of heat flow, and are part of the criteria utilized in R-value testing. The "Down" R-Value reflects the amount of heat being prevented from entering a dwelling, important in the warmer months. The "Up" R-Value indicates how much heat is prevented from escaping a building, relevant to the colder months of the year.

How Does Foil Insulation Work When it is So Thin?

Foil insulation has a very low re-transmission rate (emissivity) of radiant heat. SilverCell foil insulation blocks 97% of radiant energy that it encounters, which translates to significantly reduced surface temperatures of buildings.

Why do some SilverCell Insulation products have a blue toned side?

In some circumstances, it is a workplace health and safety requirement to have some form of anti-glare on the upper/outer side of reflective foil insulation.
